Pass Plus

What is Pass Plus?

Introduced in 1995, Pass Plus is a training scheme specifically aimed at new drivers. Designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry, Pass Plus will build upon your existing skills and knowledge and teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, which will help you to become more confident on the roads. By gaining further driving experience in a variety of road conditions and situations, you can significantly improve your chances of avoiding involvement in a road accident and you may even reduce your insurance premiums.

You will not have to take a test at the end of the course but you will be continually assessed. You must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an achieved or exceeded standard.

Who can take part?

You can take take Pass Plus within your first year of passing your practical driving test

What's involved?

When you get your full driving licence, you can book for a Pass Plus course.

The course is intended as a minimum of six hours and covers the following modules;

Town driving

The Pass Plus course starts with an introduction to Pass Plus, explaining the aims of the course and the skills and knowledge that will be acquired.

The second part of this module is an on-road session which covers the different features and aspects of driving in a town.

You will be expected to deal with complex junctions, public transport, heavy traffic etc.  The module will concentrate on:

  • Observation, Awareness & Judgement
  • Making Eye Contact
  • Consideration For Vulnerable Road Users
  • Being Cautious Without Being Over-Cautious
  • Allowing Adequate Clearance & Keeping Space

Your instructor will gove you advice on:

  • Multi-lane junctions
  • Unusual Roundabouts
  • Trams & Bus, Cycle & Taxi Lanes
  • Under- & Over-passes
     

All-weather driving

The aim of this module is to cover all aspects of driving in varied weather conditions, including speed and stopping distances in:

  • Rain
  • Sleet, Snow & Ice
  • Mist & Fog
  • Bright Sunshine
  • You will also look at skidding:

  • Causes of skidding
  • Prevention of skids
  • Correcting slow-speed skids
  • Braking on poor surfaces
  • Aquaplaning
     

Driving out of town

This module covers out of town driving and driving on rural roads.  You will cover the following:

  • The main differences from town driving
  • Observing the road ahead
  • Making progress safely
  • Bends, hills, uneven roads and dead ground
  • Keeping a safe distance from other vehicles
  • Safe overtaking

Emphasis is paid to:

Consideration for pedestrians where there is no footpath

  • Horseriders
  • Sharp bends
  • Use of the horn
  • Farm entrances, buildings
  • Slow moving vehicles
  • Livestock
  • Wild animals
  • Mud and other debris on the road
  • Use of passing places
     

Night driving

This module covers all aspects of driving in darkness. This includes:

  • The importance of headlights
  • Getting used to the dark
  • Driving at dusk and dawn
  • Speed and distance judgement
  • Keeping your lights clean
  • Correct use of lights
  • The effects of dazzle
  • Awarweness and anticipation of vulnerable road users
  • Parking
     

Driving on dual carriageways

 

This module covers driving on high-speed multi-lane roads where the two carriageways are separated by a central reservation. The skills you will acquire include:

  • Taking effective observation
  • Judgement and planning
  • Keeping a safe distance & the two-second rule
  • Joining and leaving dual carriageways
  • Overtaking
  • Lane discipline
  • Correct use of speed
     

Driving on Motorways

This module covers all aspects of driving on a motorway.  As a newly qualified driver, you may well not have had experience of driving on a motorway and this module will prove invaluable. There are numerous differences between motorways and other roads and you will gain knowledge and experience of the different rules, regulations and signage that applies.  You will cover:

  • Planning your journey
  • Joining and leaving the motorway
  • Safe speeds and varying circumstances
  • Taking effective observation
  • Signs, signals and road markings
  • Overtaking
  • Lane discipline
  • Fatigue
  • Breakdown procedures
  • Use of lights
  • Crosswinds
  • Courtesy
  • Debris on the carriageway

Will I have to take another test?

There is no further test to take. However, you must complete all six of the Pass Plus modules and your progress will be continually assessed by your instructor. When your instructor is satisfied that you have reached the appropriate standards in all six modules, you will receive a certificate from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and you will then be eligible for discounted insurance premiums via the insurance companies participating in the Pass Plus scheme.

Who can teach Pass Plus?

Only fully qualified Approved Driving Instructors (ADI's) are allowed to register with the Driving Standards Agency as Pass Plus instructors.

How much does Pass Plus cost?

The course is intended as a minimum of six hours and and costs £150 at all times, even if you require additional tuition over and above the minimum six hours.
